New Humor Book Details What Actually Happens If You Quit Your Day Job To Pursue Your Dreams

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Altitude Adjustment” by Emily Eddins.

A writer describes her fish-out-of-water experience as an urban refugee pursuing her dream of living in Truckee, a small California ski town, through her humorous vignettes in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

When Emily Eddins and her family moved to Truckee, a small mountain town in California near Lake Tahoe to escape post-9/11 realities in Washington, D.C., they got more than they bargained for. She reflects on their misguided dreams in this new collection of humorous essays about life in a small ski resort town.

For years, the author dreamed of leaving city life behind, until she learned the hard way that the grass is not always greener if you live in a resort town. After a series of athletic and social failures, she discovers that living in a beautiful vacation spot is not the paradise she thought it would be. “Altitude Adjustment” describes social and athletic gaffes that the couple never imagined before relocating to a winter wonderland. They quickly realize that being a permanent resident of a vacation spot – even one as beautiful as Truckee — feels very different than being a visitor.

ALTITUDE ADJUSTMENT is a book of humorous essays in which the author exposes her own weaknesses while also shedding light on the peculiar and alien habits of the locals. For example, in “Will It Work Out?” the author worries that her athletic inadequacies will make her a social pariah in a town of former Olympians. In “Gods and Whores,” she examines her addiction to strip malls and makes comparisons and contrasts between the quaint town of Truckee and her edgy neighbor, Reno, to the south. In the final essay, “Moving On,” after the author’s husband accepts a new job in Seattle, the author looks forward to returning to the urban rat race. Through it all, the author retains her sense of humor, making the best out of life in a paradise that has turned into anything but.

Author Emily Eddins has been published in a variety of literary publications including the Rio Grande Review, Front Porch and The Willow Review. Three of these essays appeared in other publications: Louisville Review, Forge and Toad Suck Review. She and her husband lived in Seattle before moving to Northern California with their three children.
